Artist Statement

Why I shoot.

Photography entices me with the idea that each moment can truly be unique to each artist. Ever since I learned the basics of using a camera, photography has been a key part of my life. Everywhere I go, a camera follows. Throughout this medium, I explore self-expression, self-worth, intimacy, memory, nostalgia, and my struggle with these feelings. These thoughts and insecurities peek through in my works; my work is about overcoming these challenges. I tend to work with patterns, in and out of the editing process. Whether that be multiple images layered together to create an ideal composition, or just the way I set up a scene in a single photograph.

I draw inspiration from the historical artist Francesca Woodman. Her beautiful, yet haunting, black and white self-portraits were the key driving point for my Body Dysmorphia works. I work in layers, abstracting images and giving the viewer visual play. Contemporary artist James Welling creates really colorful compositions with layering techniques, giving a vivid, euphoric look. This is really similar to what I do, though not as vivid. I want my viewers to be perplexed, have a moment to take it all in, and come to their own consensus on what my work is about.
